MAZATLAN  HISTORY 


 
Mazatlánis  not  only  a seaport of commercial proportions but has become through the years,  one  of  MEXICO'S  prime  vacation  destinations for all those wishing to enjoy seemingly endless   miles    of    soft    sand    beaches    and    breakers    churning    into    a    frothy   surf.
 

Sun  drenched  Mazatlán  has  everything  in  the  way   of   attractions,  facilities  and  diversion for  young  and  old...  this "PEARL OF THE PACIFIC"  as  it  is  referred   to  today  its  name from   the    "NAHUATL"    ingigenous word    "MAZATL"   meaning  "PLACE  OF  DEER ".
 

It  is  Mexico's  billfish  capital with over five thousand sailfish and marlin caught yearly.... but is not  only  Mazatlán  itself  that  attracts  a  growing  number  of  visitors, this is a region offering
diverse cities and towns founded well over 400 years ago with a charm reminescent of the Spanish conquest,  sailors  who happened to arrive to this area called it "islands of mazatlán", due to the many  founfef  on  easter  Sunday  1531  by  25  Spaniards  commanded   by   Nuño  de  Guzman
Mazatlán, for many years remained a dormat settlement. 
A  permanent  colony  was  not  established  until  the  early  1820's.    The excellent fishing was a flourishing  trade  gave  the  city  the  nickname  of  athens  of  the  west  coast.

    Actually the first municipal goverment was not installed until 1827 during the latter part of the 19th.       Century  and  after  the  war  of  independence  several  attempts by French, British and American  warships  frone  on  invading  Mazatlán  were  frustated by the heroic defenders of the port.

   Today's  Mazatlán is a thriving city with a population reaching the 550,000 mark.It is presently one  of  the  country's  better  known  resort  cities,  closer to The United States and Canada than most other beach destinations in the Mexico Over 9,000 hotel and condominium lodging ranging from the modest, atents to the great expansion Mazatlán has had in the past few years....
A  21  kilometers  beachside  boulevard,  the  country's  longest,  is  lined by hotels, trailer courts motels  restaurants,  night  spots  and  assortment of activities and attractions wich contribute to make vacationer's stay the most pleasent ever.

Sinaloa  state  is  divided  into  four  sections,  each  section  representing  the  most  important historic  cities  of  the  states  which  are  Culiacan,  El Fuerte,  El Rosario and Mazatlán... on the reverse  side  of   the  economic  activities,   income,  geographical  and  astrological  situation  of this  city  as  well  as  the  city's  traditional  customes. It is located at the end of Olas Altas drive.
 

MARDI GRAS....  "CARNAVAL" :  Mardi  Gras  is  "CARNAVAL"  in  Spanish,  in Mazatlán, Celebration  deted  to 1898. It is considered the third most famous carnival in the world after Rio de  Janeiro  and  New  Orlands...  During the week before Ash Wednesday in February or March, gala  activities  take  place  in  all  parts  of  the  city,  but  mainly  along  Olas Altas  beach  area.
 

This  fun  is  contagious  and  everyone  in  Mazatlán  plus  thousand of tourists from the interior of the country and from other parts of the world get into the act. Many of them return year after year  for  these  festivities...           Wandering Mariachi groups play all kinds of several parades... Advanced hotel reservation are recommended for these date.
 

WEATHER :
                     The weather is tropical but comfortable, sunny most all year around,  with  showers
                     during the months of July, August, and September.         The annual temperature is
                     28°Celsius.
 

ARCHEOLOGY : 
                    There  is  a  wide  richness  of   objets   and   artifacts  that  were  used  by  ancients
                    trives   such   as   polychrome   pottery,   dishes,  arrowheads,  masks,  adornments, 
                    necklaces,  ceremonial  jugs,  shields   and   many   other  artefacts    made    mostly

                   of clay, obsidian, limestone as well
                   as other materials... 
                   A large part  of  these  objects were
                   unearthed  in   the  suthern part of 
                   the  state of sinaloa, mainlyaround
                   the area of Mazatlán. 
                  At   present,  most of these  Indians
                  artifacts   are    found   in     private
                  collection       in       the   Mazatlán 
                  archaeological  museum.
